Universal Studios Japan Guide: My Experience, Tips & Best Rides

If you’re visiting Osaka, one place you shouldn’t skip is
Universal Studios Japan (USJ).

I visited during a trip to Osaka — and honestly, it ended up being one of the highlights.

From the rides to the atmosphere, everything felt:

  • Surprisingly better than my experience at Universal Hollywood
  • Polished
  • Immersive

Where is Universal Studio Japan?

USJ is located in:
Osaka (Sakurajima area)

Getting there from Tokyo:

  • 🚄 Shinkansen (Nozomi): ~2.5 hours (~¥14,000 one way)
  • ✈️ Flight: ~1.5 hours (often cheaper depending on timing)

Flights can be cheaper, but prices spike during holidays.

Best Time to Visit USJ

Avoid:

  • Golden Week (late April–early May)
  • Obon (mid-August)
  • Weekends

I went during summer — and the heat + queues made it the only downside.

Best time:

  • Weekdays outside peak seasons
  • Spring or autumn (much more comfortable)

Best Rides at Universal Studios Japan

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

One of the most immersive areas in the park.

Highlights:

  • Iconic shops and scenery
  • Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey
  • Butterbeer (very sweet — not for everyone)

The Flying Dinosaur

The most intense ride in the park.

  • Fast, aggressive, and unforgettable
  • Suspended rollercoaster

Hollywood Dream – The Ride

A unique rollercoaster — especially the backward version.

You don’t know what’s coming next, which makes it even better.

The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man 4K3D

One of the most immersive rides.

  • 4K visuals
  • Physical effects (heat, wind, movement)

Great for fans and non-fans alike.

Space Fantasy – The Ride

A fun, spinning indoor coaster.

Very enjoyable — but expect long queues.

USJ vs Tokyo Disneyland

It depends on your preference:

Tokyo Disneyland:

  • Better for younger audiences
  • Classic Disney experience

USJ:

  • More intense rides
  • Broader appeal for adults
  • Unique attractions like:
    • Super Nintendo World
    • Minions
    • Harry Potter

Personally, I’d say USJ is more balanced for all age groups.

Tips for Visiting Universal Studios Japan

  • Buy an Express Pass (expensive but saves hours)
  • Arrive early (queues build fast)
  • Avoid peak seasons and weekends
  • Stay hydrated (especially in summer)
  • Prioritise popular rides early
  • I waited up to 2 hours per ride, even on a “quiet” day.
