Nikko in Autumn: Best Places to Visit & Travel Guide
If you’re visiting Japan in autumn, one place you shouldn’t miss is Nikko.
Known for its rich history and natural beauty, Nikko becomes something special during the fall season — with vibrant red and orange leaves covering temples, mountains, and lakes.
Living nearby, I’ve visited Nikko multiple times, and it’s easily one of the most beautiful autumn destinations in Japan.
Why Visit Nikko in Autumn?
During autumn, Nikko offers:
- Stunning maple foliage
- Historic temples and shrines
- Scenic lakes and waterfalls
Even during quieter periods, it remains popular — and during peak season, expect large crowds, especially at major attractions.
Nikkō Tōshō-gū & the Tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu

One of the most important historical sites in Japan.
This shrine complex is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years.
Highlights include:
- Intricate carvings and gold detailing
- The famous “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” monkeys
- A long staircase leading to Ieyasu’s tomb
Entrance fee: approx. ¥1300
Worth visiting at least once
Ryuzu Falls (Dragon Head Waterfall)

One of the most scenic waterfalls in Nikko.
Surrounded by autumn foliage, it creates a dramatic and photogenic view.
The name “Dragon Head” comes from the shape of the falls.
Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖)

A peaceful lake surrounded by mountains and autumn colours.
Things to do:
- Walk around the lake
- Rent swan boats
- Enjoy the scenery
It’s also close to Kegon Falls.
Toshogu Shrine (東照宮, Tōshōgū)

This famous craving located within the Toshugu shrine has recently been renovated the picture here is one I took before the restoration. The famous “see no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil” attract millions of visitors a year. There is an entrance fee of ¥1300 this is a little expensive however it’s definitely worth it at least once.
Shinkyo Bridge (神橋)

A sacred and iconic bridge in Nikko, often photographed during autumn.
You can pay to cross it, but honestly:
It’s best admired from a distance.
Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki)

One of Japan’s most famous waterfalls.
There are two viewing platforms:
- Free viewing area
- Paid observation deck (better view)
Expect crowds, especially during peak autumn.
Akechidaira Plateau (明智平)

For the best panoramic views in Nikko, this is the place.
Take the cable car up to the observation deck to see:
- The valley
- Autumn foliage
- Views leading toward Kegon Falls
Warning:
Queues can be very long during peak season.
Travel Tips
- Visit early in the day to avoid crowds
- Autumn peak is usually late October to early November
- Expect heavy traffic during peak season
- Use live cameras on official tourism websites to track foliage
